Traveling with toddlers isn’t easy. They require much more attention than other children. If you’re planning a long trip, more scheduled stops is ideal when driving. If you’re flying, just do your best to occupy them as they’re likely not going to be interested in the in-flight movie. The few tips below will help you make traveling with toddlers easier.
Toddlers typically have high metabolisms and are rather active. This means that they need to have a couple of snacks throughout the day, such as one between breakfast and lunch and one between lunch and dinner. Healthy snacks such as fruit, yogurt bites and similar items are ideal. Keep the snacks healthy so that the children aren’t begging for sweet treats such as candy.
Stop to Get some Exercise Frequently
It is important that your toddler gets room to stretch his or her legs. This may mean stopping every two hours but it is only for a few minutes to let them run around a bit. The exercise will help them to not get stir crazy or bored. Kids need to expel their energy to remain content.
Play Music they like
When you’re at home, play a few different types of music. Watch the reaction of your toddler to the music. Whatever it seems that they respond to the best with, play that during a trip. If you are on a plane, load the iPod with a few playlists just for them. The music keeps their mind stimulated and occupied at the same time.
Take handheld games
Handheld games, such as Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portables are ideal for toddlers. You may think that this is too much for them to comprehend, but children grasp items visually far easier than you imagine. Simple kids’ games like puzzle matching or shape games keep their mind busy and gives them a sense of determination to get to the next level.
Install or Have DVD Watching Capabilities Handy
Again, visual stimulation is important; it replaces the feeling of boredom in toddlers. Consider installing a portable DVD player or perhaps having some audio visual equipment installed in the vehicle to stay permanently. Take their favorite movies along to keep them occupied. If you are flying, a portable option would be ideal, with a set of headphones of course. Toddlers are unlikely to be interested in movies played by the airlines due to the subject matter.
Traveling with toddlers doesn’t have to be challenging. As long as they are kept busy, are fed on time and aren’t awakened much from naps, the trip should go rather smoothly. Try to plan a couple of activities along the way and call it toddler play time. This is time to see something new, do something fun, and get their pent up energy out. The more that kids can see outside of windows, the quieter they will be and the less they will fuss. There will be instances where things are just hectic, but that is to be expected when you have young children.
