In this day and age, you want your kids to have every edge that they can in the intellectual world. You may wonder how to raise a child that is super smart but not obnoxious about it. Most children have tons of potential. It’s just that their potential is never tapped into. You, as a parent, can choose to not only help your child find their way intellectually, but help them to become lifelong learners, as well.
- Talk to Your Children
One way to begin helping your child’s intellect grow early on in development is to speak to them. You may feel a little silly at first, but you’d be surprised how much those little guys catch on to. So talk to them about the weather, what they’re eating, your bad hair day – anything at all. Open those lines of communication early.
- Allow Reasonable Technology Time
Although you shouldn’t allow your child to live in front of a television or on the tablet, you really should allow a reasonable amount of technology time every day. There are great free computer games available online that endorse learning.
- Read with Your Children and to Them
Reading to your children early on and then encouraging independent reading as they get older is one of the best ways that you can enhance intellectual development. It doesn’t matter what they’re reading as long as they’re reading. Comic books, fiction, or even graphic novels are acceptable.
- Encourage Recreation
No one wants to have their face crammed into an encyclopedia all of the time including your kids. It’s actually very important to their intellectual development to have a sufficient amount of recreation. Get them out of the house and let them have fun! Sports are great, but so is plenty of free time.
- Imagination Is Important
Let your child use their imagination to their heart’s content. He wants to pretend to be a super hero from Mars and wear Dad’s boots around the backyard? Why not? Is your daughter trying to find fairies in the bushes? Why not? Let your children have the freedom to dream.
- Encourage Responsibility
Children need to learn how to handle responsibility. Teaching them life skills within reason of their ages will also help their intellectual development. So Mom, help yourself and your kid by teaching them to load the dishwasher. It’s good for them!
- Offer Your Support
Your child needs to know that you believe he can do anything so that he can believe he can do anything.
- Listen to Music
Play music for your kids consistently. Try to expose them to a variety of genres but don’t feel the need to be rigid about it. Rock and roll is fine, but do try to throw in some classical on occasion.
- Encourage Other Fine Arts
Encouraging the participation in or the observation of the other fine arts also encourages intellectual development. Take the kids to the theatre. Watch dance shows on television. Gift your child with a paint set and an easel.
10. Travel Is Invaluable
A great way to really bring out the intellectual abilities of your children is through travel. Even if you can’t afford to go far, trips to different places with different cultures are beneficial.
