Puppies are just like human toddlers, they get into everything. They hunt, explore and find mischief multiple times a day. This isn’t to be bad or do what they’re not supposed to, they simply do not know any better and are exploring. You, as their parent, have to be diligent in keeping the home, especially the kitchen, safe for them as you would a human toddler.
Use Child Locks on Cabinets
Puppies will open cabinet doors and get inside to explore, it is forbidden territory but it is something they just have to check out for themselves. This means that they can get into cleaners, lower cabinets that store cooking equipment and even cabinets that store food under the counter. This is dangerous for the pup as hazardous chemicals ingested poison their bodies and can result in their passing over the Rainbow Bridge early.
Weigh down the Garbage Can
Not only is it important to empty the garbage can daily, but you should also weigh it down under the bag in the bottom of the can. This prevents the curious puppy from being able to pull the garbage can down and get into dangerous items like opened cans, chicken bones, raw poultry and other items that can be harmful to them.
Keep Loose Items up High
Keep kitchen towels and anything that you have hanging on the refrigerator out of puppy’s reach. Look to see how high he or she stands on their hind legs and put items up past their nose height. This prevents them from eating cloth, magnets and other items that can leave them with digestion problems, torn intestines and renal difficulties. These items also pose a choking hazard to the puppy. Consider placing a hook up high on a wall to hang kitchen towels instead of draping them over the sink, cabinets or oven door.
Keep your puppy in perfect healthy by puppy-proofing the kitchen. While there are plenty of other things for the pup to get into around the house, items in the kitchen can be the most detrimental to their health. Anything they can get their mouth on is fair game in their minds.
