On Friday I packed my bags and got on the road for my weekend trip to Washington DC. This is my second time going there this year, but my first trip was just for a few hours during the night and I wasn’t able to see what the state had to offer during the daytime.
This go around I stayed at the Extended Stay America in Landover Maryland and overall I was able to have a reasonably priced weekend getaway.
Arriving to Extended Stay America
I arrived at Extended Stay America after midnight and the overall area is quiet. However, upon pulling up to the hotel I noticed that it was two police cars there and upon entering the main lobby of the hotel someone was sleeping in the main area. Both things were a little skeptical to me and I started to second guess whether I would be staying in a safe area. However, since it was late, I was tired from the long ride and just ready to get some sleep so I could explore DC in a few hours.
Once in the room, I was greeted with a welcome arrangement that had been left for me on the counter. It had some nice goodies and the note said that the team leader had cleaned it herself.
Finally made it to my destination and @extendedstayamerica had a nice welcome kit waiting for me. #myESA #travel #roadtrip #weekendgetaway #blogger #giveaways4mom #ad

After inspecting the room almost everything checked out. I’m one of those people who can be a tad picky so I do strip down the beds to make sure that they don’t have bed bugs as that would be a horrible thing to experience. Well, there weren’t any bed bugs, however, the top cover did have a questionable stain on it so that was a no go. The front guest guy seemed nice enough, but it was late so I wasn’t going to fuss about the dirty comfort, I could do without it since the sheets were clean.
Did I mention that this was my first weekend vacation without kids in like forever? Apparently, I was so tired from having to be up 5am every single morning – even on weekends – because I slept until noon.
I was starving when I woke up since I skipped all meals on Friday, but before I could make any food I would have to go grocery shopping. The good news is the team leader called up to check and see if I needed anything. For some reason, they don’t keep the cooking supplies and dinnerware in the room so I had to wait for her to bring it up. She very friendly and even offered to unpack everything, but I declined as I am perfectly capable of unpacking it and didn’t feel she needed to go through the extra trouble. But, I do find it nice that they offer to do that.
Shopping in Landover Maryland
Once ready to go grocery shopping for a quick meal, I found it easier to ask one of the front desk people where the closest grocery store was. I tried Googling myself, but everything it was pulling up was so far away. The front desk person admitted she was new to the area herself and that there were two grocery stores, but she only knew how to get to one, which was called “Shoppers World”.
It turns out Shoppers World wasn’t a grocery store, but instead was a discount department store. When I walked in I was shocked, but saw the prices on some items and decided to look around. I am so glad I was directed here. They had some great prices and items so I was able to get some jackets and stuff for the boys.
Once out of there I noticed a Chick-fil-a, so I had to go there and grab a bite to eat and a frosted lemonade. However, I will say if I do go back to this area again I won’t be returning. The person working drive thru, seemed like she was irritated taking orders and I’m used to Chick-fil-a having great customer service and this one seems to be lacking that.

The cashier in Shoppers World was able to direct me to a grocery store, though. It was called Shoppers. When in their I decided to just get some eggs, bread, and turkey sausage to make for the evening time once done exploring DC in the daytime. Extended Stay America didn’t have any spatulas or anything so I needed something that could be managed to be cooked with a fork.
Just came across this place and was able to do some last minute #Christmas #shopping for the boys. They have some amazing deals. We need this store at home. #shoppersworld #ilovetoshop

Exploring Madame Tussauds in Washington DC
When searching for things to do online during the day a ton of good options came up. But, in the early afternoon since it was raining and ice out, I decided it would be best to do something inside instead of one of the outdoor tours that I had initially wanted to do. Madame Tussauds came up in the searches and for $30 I would be able to get the best experience. So, I purchased the tickets and set off to DC.
The good thing about the Extended Stay America location where I was staying was that it was only about 30 minutes from Washington DC so the commute wasn’t too bad.
Madame Tussauds was a unique experience. They have everything from presidents to first ladies, and even the media. Also, while going through there are a few interactive things that you can do and they even have costumes that you can try on for photo opps with some of the wax figures.

My favorite part was getting a wax statue on my hand. It was such a unique experience and makes the perfect keepsake to remember my time there.
I spent about two hours inside of Madame Tussauds and then while walking back to parking I just took some time to stroll around and check out the different shops that they had before heading back to my hotel.
Cooking at Extended Stay America
Once back at the hotel, I had some eggs, toast, and turkey sausage. It turned out amazing despite not having spatulas to cook with. The room includes two burners and a microwave so when staying with Extended Stay America you do have some flexibility when it comes to the meal options you can make. Also, they have a full-sized fridge so you can have drinks and other cold items available.
Washington DC Nightlife and Returning to Virginia
Once done with dinner, it was time to pack up and head out to explore the nightlife. I decided to go back to the same club as my first visit since I was already familiar with the atmosphere and knew what to expect. Thankfully this time I was able to make it earlier so I avoided the long line. They had great drinks and music so it was a night filled with fun.
Closing Thoughts on Extended Stay America and Washington DC
I enjoyed my getaway weekend as it was very much needed. I took an entire weekend to myself so I could just relax and unwind from the everyday bustle of my life. I even left my computer at home so I wouldn’t be tempted to work.
Extended Stay America overall gets 3.5 stars from me. The customer service was great, but the questionable start to my visit and the dirty comforter forces me to take away a few stars. I do like how staying with them makes traveling more affordable, though, because since you can cook in the room you don’t have to worry about spending a ton of cash on food. You can just go grocery shopping and make your own meals there.
I think this hotel is meant more for long term stays and since it is close to both Baltimore and DC it is in a prime location without having to pay an expensive hotel just to be in the main area. However, if you like more luxury amenities you may not feel very comfortable here as it is just the basics. They do provide Wi-Fi and a complimentary breakfast, though. Therefore, I would recommend Extended Stay America to travelers who just need a place to sleep and eat and plan to get out and explore attractions versus hanging around the hotel.
Have you ever stayed at an Extended Stay America? If so, what was your experience like?
