Personalized Books Get Your Kids Excited to Read Anytime
Children are pretty fascinated about themselves. My kids, for instance, always want to know what they were like as babies, although they aren’t far from being babies.
Having a storybook that mentions their names, has their pictures, and places them in the story will make your child want to read all the time. It doesn’t matter if it’s during the day or right before bedtime, it’s exciting no matter how many times they read it.
For example, my oldest son recently received “The Incredible Intergalactic Journey Home” and since it has arrived we have read that story at least 10 times already. The first time we were reading it I wished that I had a video going because oh was he excited.
He immediately noticed his name in the book and also the book featured Virginia Beach and our current street address right up to our actual door address. Once the book was over he proudly revealed that the entire book was about him and since has been telling anyone who will listen how he has a book that is entirely about him.
Children Will Start Reading to their Siblings and Friends
Now, something you don’t catch too often is children reading to other children. They typically are engaged in television or video games. Your child is excited to have a personalized book and want to show it off! You can be sure they’ll read this book to their siblings and friends. This, of course, is right after they’ve read it a few times to prove to you how well they can read.
For instance, when my oldest first received “The Incredible Intergalactic Journey Home” we read it after school before his younger brother was home. As soon as my youngest walked through the door later that evening he immediately ran for the book and wanted to sit down and share the story with him. My youngest oohed and awed while commenting appropriately on the familiar places and the mentions of my older son’s name. It was the perfect bonding of siblings experience.
Keeps Your Kids Engaged Throughout the Story
As your child is reading or listening to you read, their imagination will take flight! They are actively engaged throughout the story. You’ll soon see them doing activities that may come with the personalized book or get started with their own. My kids often start drawing scenes from the book, which helps me know they paid attention.
Another great reason your child should have a personalized book is because they will want to start forming their own endings or continuations to the book. This aids in healthy critical thinking skills development.
During out story time session of “The Intergalactic Journey Home,” my oldest son was guessing what would be said next. For instance, in the story one of the reoccurring things was one of the characters constantly asking for lemonade or bringing up lemonade. Therefore, each time that character appeared in the book my son would automatically conclude that he was going to say something about lemonade.
Children are More Likely to Pick Up More Vocabulary Words
There may be vocabulary words your child isn’t too familiar with. Since your child is more engaged in the story, they are going to pay attention to these words now. They will either pick up on the meaning while reading the story or ask you what it means. The older your child becomes, the more they will learn to research these words on their own.
For example, while reading “The Intergalactic Journey Home” my son was able to learn a new word – “Atrocious”. He asked me what the meaning was and now since then, he has been going out of his way to fit the term into his vocabulary to show everyone that he knows a new “big kid” word.
