Have you ever wanted to switch up your appearance but didn’t know if a certain haircut, makeup look, or outfit would look right for you? I know that I’ve been there and it can be expensive to invest in a new look only to find out that you don’t like it and in some cases, you may be stuck with it for a few months (even if it doesn’t look right on you), especially when it comes to changing your hair. Therefore, today I am sharing some of my tips for successfully transforming your appearance so you can avoid some of the epic fails that I have experienced over the years.
Successfully Transforming Your Makeup Look
Makeup trends are always changing and I personally find it hard to keep up. On a normal day, I am fine with just some mascara and lip gloss, however, for special occasions, I like to add in a little more such as eyeliner, eyeshadow, etc.
One thing that was super hard for me to master was the smoky eye look. It felt like it took me 4 or 5 months to accomplish that. Now I’m loving the glossy eye look, which I think will be easy, but I also thought that about the smoky eye look so who knows.
Basically, my tip for transforming your makeup look successfully is to not assume that something is going to be as easy as it appears and don’t attempt to do that makeup look on a day that you plan to rock it. You’ll end up having to redo your entire face more than likely, which will put you behind schedule.
Instead, on an off day, practice until you get it like you want it to avoid making yourself late for something important.
Successfully Transforming Your Hair
Whether you want to try a new color in your hair or try out a different hair length, don’t do it until you have visualized it on yourself. I remember wanting to go back to red hair a few years back and not remembering which shade I used before and being stuck with the wrong shade for months – epic fail! I have also considered shorter hair styles, but luckily, I decided to try it out before chopping my own hair and suffering through wearing a look that didn’t suit me or constantly having to purchase wigs and extensions just to get a longer hairstyle.
The way you can decide if a new hairstyle is for you is to purchase a wig in the color/style that you are considering. This is what I did personally to determine if a specific shortcut would work for me. (It didn’t by the way so I saved myself money lol). I suggest wearing it for a couple of days because sometimes styles can grow on you. Other times it won’t and at least this way you won’t have cut your hair for nothing and be forced to wait for it to grow back.
The way I used to determine whether a color was for me (after my luck ran out and I picked the wrong shade of red) was to just dye the back part of my hair. For me personally, I love mixing two colors in my hair and by just putting the test color in the back, it wasn’t too much of a loss because I mainly wear my hair down so it just appears to be highlighted.
However, now I learned about this cool app called Styled by Trendage that allows you to upload your photo try out different hairstyles and outfits for FREE so you can determine if something is a good look for you or not since it is on your head. Let’s face it, just because something looks good on a model it doesn’t mean it will look good on us.

Last, but certainly not least, no one has time to be wasting money on clothing just to find out that it’s something that will sit in the back of the closet until we finally decide to donate it. Before kids, and even with one kid, it was common for me to shop sales or go to the mall for a date night outfit and end up purchasing 4-5 different options just to ensure that one would work. I had to nip that little nasty habit in the bud because I was getting stuff and then not liking it on me the day of and throwing it in my closet until I donated it or gave it to my mom.
With three kids I do about 90% of my clothes shopping online so I can get the best bang for my buck and because who wants to take three kids out to a store to watch me try on clothes? I’ve never done it and never will, but I can imagine the experience wouldn’t go very well.
Again, that’s where the Styled by Trendage app, which is available for iPhone users, comes in again. After you’ve picked out your hair style you are then directed to a new slide where you can customize your body type and try on different selections so you can see exactly how good (or unpleasant) something is going to make you look.
A Few Notes on Styled by Trendage
While I do think Styled by Trendage is a cool app and it can prevent money from being wasted there are a few things that you should know before deciding if it is the app for you.
- It’s free for iPhone users only – You have nothing to lose by downloading the app
- It’s new and glitchy – I experienced an issue getting my photo uploaded and then when going through the stages I kept getting an error message. I’m not a very patient person though, so it took me a couple of days to finally get to the clothing customizations.
Other than that, I think you will love the app and find it as useful as I do.
