I usually don’t travel far with my boys during summer break because I’ll be honest and admit that it is hard taking three young kids states away to attend an event or vacation. Therefore, I have become somewhat of an expert when it comes to keeping kids busy during the summer months.
While we occasionally travel to Maryland and I do solo traveling during the summer most of the things we do are at most five hours away from our home. During the summer, you will see me being very active on Instagram showing the various things that we experience locally.
For those who live in Virginia, or plan to vacation here this summer, these are some of the things that I recommend for kids this summer.
KidsFest at Kings Dominion
Did you know that from now until June 30th everyone pays kid price when visiting Kings Dominion?
My boys and I spent some time at Kings Dominion last year for the first time and ever since then they have been hooked on going back every season. In fact, we were just there in March to experience the new and improved Planet Snoopy. This month we will be checking out KidsFest. However, I’m sure while there we will make a day of it and check out some of the other new features that they have added in as well.
About KidsFest at Kings Dominion
KidsFest is from June 10th – 18th. 2017 is going to be one of the biggest yet. For two weekends, there will be a huge selection of kid’s activities such as crafts, magic, chalk art, animal shows, live entertainment, and more that will not only keep the kids entertained but the entire family.
One of the biggest attractions is Brick Fest Live. This is the largest touring LEGO show, which is interactive and fun for the entire family. The best part is it will be available both weekends of KidsFest.

Do you have a child that wants to play football when the season starts? Sending them to one of the various Virginia football camps can help them to prepare.
I signed my middle son up to play football for next season, so twice a week he will be conditioning up until it’s time for practice to start in August.
I have also been researching various football camps for him to attend where pro athletes are hosting so he can get some experience. Even if your child is doing a different sport, a camp that will help them sharpen or learn the skills will be great when it comes to preparing them for practice.
United Soccer Academy Senior Squirts
Soccer is the biggest grassroots game in the country today, and for good reason. Take along your kids to United Soccer Academy’s Senior Squirts sessions, which are just perfect for kids between the ages of five and nine. For kids who want to start playing soccer, they’ll learn how to dribble, how to tackle, and how to shoot. These soccer camps last all summer and are perfect for becoming a real soccer player and making friends at the same time.
Do you want to take the whole family away somewhere nice this summer? I personally have my eyes on Wintergreen Resort because they have something for everyone. You can even bring along your sitter if you want to enjoy some “me time” at the spa.
Go up to Discovery Ridge and join the Adventure Center where kids can enjoy air hockey, pool tables, and the climbing tower. There’s also a zip line and regular archery classes. After this, the kids can head down to Ridgely’s Fun Park for campfires and movies under the night sky.
There’s also the chance to get the kids outside with hiking and indoor and outdoor swimming.

What Will You Do this Summer in Virginia?
You have more than enough options to keep the kids happy and healthy. Get them away from the TV and get them out into the sunshine. These activities are safe, affordable, and most importantly fun.
