School is a fun time for kids, however, once they get out for summer break and get used to not going to school every day it can make them feel not so positive about going to school. Today, I thought I would give out some tips for encouraging a positive attitude about school during the summer since school will be back in session before we know it.
Do Educational Activities at Home
During the summer break, I go out of my way to ensure that the boys don’t forget about school during the summer by working in educational activities into our schedule while we are at home. We have various learning kits, I print off printables that I find online, and of course, they still must practice their sight words and reading. This ensures that they don’t get sidetracked and out of their daily school routines so it’s much easier for them to adjust when school comes back into session.
This summer we added a new item to our educational activities. It is the Hot Dots Jr. Succeeding in School with Highlights Set. We aren’t new to the Hot Dots Jr. line because they have been using these sets before my oldest even started school. However, the new set is perfect for my upcoming kindergartner and 1st grader. It features over 160 self-check lessons and 80 double-sided cards. Plus, when you add in the talking Owl pen, it has my youngest son asking if we can work on this activity multiple times per week.

Give Kids an Incentive to Want to do Good During School
My older two sons have decided this school year they want to get started with football, which is awesome. But, we have agreed that the only way they will be able to keep it up once school starts is if they maintain good grades and positive behavior once school is in. This is their incentive to want to do good during the school year.
Last year, they did okay work wise, but they had more off days than I would have preferred with their behavior. Therefore, this year I’m hoping football will change that because who wants to do fundraisers and practice daily only to find out that they will be sitting on the sidelines during the game when all their teammates are playing?

Include Kids When School Supply Shopping
There’s no better way to get kids excited about school than to include them in the school supply shopping. While the lower grades in my state don’t get to use their own specific school supplies outside of their backpack, for the first time my oldest son will be able to keep his school supplies to himself. Therefore, he gets to pick out which character pencils, pencil pack, and even notebooks that he wants to use this school year. The younger two, of course, get to pick out their own backpacks and shoes, which makes them eager to want to go to school to show it off to their classmates.
My youngest is already super excited about showing off his ZIPIT Grillz backpack. This backpack not only looks good but it has comfort straps to make sure he feels good while wearing it as well.
Let Them Connect with Friends Over the Summer
On the last day of school, both boys were a little sad that they couldn’t see their teachers and friends anymore. Therefore, I surprised them by allowing them to go to an old sitter’s house where they could connect with some of their older friends that they weren’t able to see during the school year. The best part is while they are there they have even been learning Spanish with their friends.
Final Thoughts – Preparing for the First Day of School

Preparing for the first day of school should typically begin the second week of summer vacation. You don’t have to make learning and staying in school mode boring – make it fun! This keeps your kids on their toes all summer and when it gets closer to school kicking back in the only thing you really must worry about is getting them back on their sleeping schedule.
How do you encourage your kids to have a positive attitude about school during the summer?
