Sometimes your boss will tell you to take a few extra days off work at the last minute. We may have had it up to our ears in stress at home. You may want to help celebrate a friend’s birthday and do something spontaneous. We all face those days when we want and deserve a last minute getaway. Here are seven budget-friendly destinations I thought of.
Romantic Getaway to Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania is an often looked over vacation destination. More popular destination areas surrounding here are Ohio and New York. However, there are many historical and cultural activities to attend such as the Flight 93 Memorial Grounds, attending free baseball games at Little League World Series, tour the PA State Capitol Rotunda building, and of course, tour the Yuengling factory for a beer tasting!
On the more relaxing flip side of things, there are a few last minute getaway destinations such as the historic Inn at Leola Village hotel. You can reserve a spa package and treat yourself and friend or spouse to a relaxing retreat.
The Hotel Hershey located in Hershey, PA is an elegant hotel that starts you off with treats (chocolate to be exact). Many boast about their spa services, Sunday brunch, and the chocolate spa. Visit the butterfly house and garden as well. Other options to check out are the Woodloch Pines Resort and the Felicita Golf Resort and Spa. Rates are around $225 per person and include meal plans.
The Historical Rocky Mountains
The Rocky Mountains spans through British Columbia, Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico. This terrain allows you to enjoy a variety of activities such as biking, climbing, kayaking, and bird watching all in one weekend. There are flat and mountainous terrains to explore at your leisure.
And don’t take the fun out of things – be sure to grab yourself a cabin. Although you’re in the wild, it’s still very modern. Some include washers and dryers, fireplaces, grills, hot tubs, and the internet. You can select to be near the waterfront or have a private river to go fishing.
Check Out All Our Nation’s Capital Has to Offer
Next to the historical monuments to see in Washington, DC, there are some wild times to be had in DC. DC is a last minute getaway perfect for those along the east coast. So this is a great getaway where you can stay at a simple hotel for a few days.
Check out some jazz nightlife or cruise around the waterfront parks. If you’re traveling around the holidays, their parades seriously can’t be beaten. If you’re looking for more of the nightlife, check out how my last minute trip to DC went in my Exploring DC Nightlife for the First Time post.

Take A Visit to The Windy City – Chicago
Now Chicago has been looked upon for ages as an expensive place to visit. However, sites such as Airbnb makes it quite affordable for even last minute getaways.
Another trick is to stay in nearby areas such as Eaglewood Resort & Spa. Grab a two-night stay here starting at $173 per night and enjoy packages that include golfing and relaxing at the spa. You can also just relax at the indoor pool or attend their outdoor dining and listen to live music. You can get to places such as Downtown Chicago Navy Pier or Six Flag’s Great America in Gurnee in under an hour. That is if you can pull away from the luxurious hotel accommodations.
The East Coast’s Long Beach
As I mentioned earlier, New York is a popular destination, but not thought of as budget friendly. Typically, when you think of Long Beach, California comes to mind. But for a day or two, Long Island is a unique and fun visit to take. There are plenty of beaches located there to hang out for a while. You can drive or take the train there (yes its close enough to walk from). You’ll enjoy cute trinket shops and museums all nearby.
The beach offers a relaxing getaway where you can kayak, swim, or get your surf on. Some websites offer deals such as $190 per night at the Long Beach Hotel, $169 per night at the Rockville Centre Inn (just 4.7 miles away). Although not providing 5-star service, if you do want just to escape for the weekend and enjoy the sightseeing and touring, this is a deal not to miss.
The Elite Hamptons
Yes, I wanted to throw in a place you may just sit back and dream of visiting. I’ve only seen the Hamptons when it comes to watching Revenge! The Hamptons is seen like an elite area with the average home prices at $2.13 million.
Now, the trick to visiting for a budget friendly getaway is to visit right before or after a holiday. The inns and hotels often have space available because most people are booking homes to stay in. So be smart about it and check out some budget friendly hotels and motels. And the more friends you bring, the better. It brings the cost down.
Now, since you’re there visiting, you may as well go sightseeing! There is the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center, Cooper’s Beach, the Montauk Point Lighthouse, Ponquogue Beach, Paumanok Vineyards, and Tanger Outlets to name a few. You will definitely not get bored here, and these are all relatively inexpensive places to visit (if not, free).
A Cruise with Your Bestie
No matter if you’re looking for a romantic getaway with your beau or want to enjoy all that life has to offer with your best friend, you can never go wrong with a cruise. There are short weekend cruises as well as weeklong cruises you can join. Carnival is one of the top cruise lines you can do and have rates starting as low as $194 per night for a four-day cruise. Check out their 36-hour sale listings.
Currently, the MV Grand Celebration has a Groupon special for an interior cabin starting at $229 for a two-night Bahamas cruise. Even with just two nights, it’s plenty of time for you and your bestie to go snorkeling, swim with the dolphins, and have a fun jeep led tour through the Bahamas.
Of course, it’s less expensive if you can drive to the ports, but if you have five days or so, why not? You don’t have to worry about much on a cruise except for souvenirs you may want to purchase as well as port fees, taxes, and gratuities. Most cruises are all inclusive, so your room, entertainment, and the food is included. So just refrain from the premium liquor and you should be good!
