What is BBQ and Brew Fest?

BBQ and Brew is a festival that runs at Kings Dominion Saturdays and Sundays from August 5th – 20th. You can try different BBQ dishes, enjoy live entertainment, and even try out some of the best local craft beers from throughout Virginia.
The dishes are mouthwatering, the beer and wine are awesome, and of course, you can’t go wrong with the live entertainment.

It makes the perfect time for parents to find time for a date.
What I Experienced
Since it had been a while since we went on a date, the kid’s dad and I decided to make the trip to Kings Dominion the opening Saturday of BBQ and Brew Fest. The kids went to a birthday party with their uncle since I really didn’t feel like it would be appropriate to have them in a section of the park where alcohol was being served and they would just want to be in the kid park not in an adult section.
Before going into the park, we picked up our complimentary tickets and were surprised with 15 tokens to experience BBQ and Brew Fest. However, once inside of the festival location we purchased 15 more tokens so we could experience more of what was available to taste since each thing required 2-4 tokens.
Kings Dominion did a good job diversifying the different foods available. I was expecting it to be mainly pork, which I don’t eat personally, my date does, but to my surprise, they had a lot of options that cater to non-pork eaters as well. They had stations for:
- North Carolina
What We Tried at BBQ and Brew
We went by each of the stations individually after securing our first round of drinks first. I started off with the Ingles Sweet Virginia Wine and he started off with the Vienna Lager both of which were very delicious.
We decided to start off our food samples with Virginia where we ordered the Tater Tots with Pulled Duck and Creamy Smoked Gouda Cheese and Smoked Wings with a side of Apple Butter BBQ Sauce.

We both were surprised at how small the samples were, especially since it was a food festival we hadn’t eaten since lunch on Friday since we were expecting the food to be filling there. However, the Tater Tots were super good and we are going to try out our own version at home soon. Unfortunately, when it came to the Smoked Wings you could tell (and you probably can see from the photos) that they were very overcooked.
After this, we decided to do something spontaneously and scary (for me at least), however, I’ll discuss this a little later.
Once back from this adventure we purchased a second set of drinks. With me getting the Chesapeake Cabernet Merlot (a bit too bitter for my taste but apparently its very strong) and him getting the Bold Rock-Hard Cider Apple, which was enjoyed.
Our taste buds then led us to Georgia where we got the Shish Kabob Beef and Jim Beam Peach Cobbler – no complaints on either of these dishes!
I Tried Something Spontaneous
Remember when I said we took a break to do something spontaneously and a little scary?
Well, the BBQ and Brew was being held in the section where the Xtreme Skyflier is. We kept seeing people swinging overhead the festival and it seemed like they were having fun. Therefore, we decided to give it a go for ourselves.
The signs said they had a special going on (you must pay for this – it’s not included with the cost of tickets) and we thought why not. It turned out that the special was no longer valid even though the signs were still displayed according to the ticket lady, but we decided to do it anyway because it’s rare that we get to try things like this since usually, the kids are with us.
After waiting for about an hour (give or take) we were finally up next.
I tell you, it was a nerve wrecking experience. The whole way up I kept my eyes closed and then at the top turns out I was the one who had to pull the release for us to fly.
In the end, I made it out alive and the experience was fun and I probably would do it again. I’m not sure if the wine gave me a little boost of courage but it was something that I wanted to share with you.

The only thing that would have made the experience better is if they had a photo and/or video option available that would allow us to always remember this experience.
Final Thoughts on BBQ and Brew Fest at Kings Dominion
Overall, we had a great date that was well worth the two hours that it took us to get there due to traffic. We had some great food, tried some new drinks, and experienced hang gliding and sky diving all in one.
If you were considering checking out BBQ and Brew Fest next weekend before it’s over I would recommend it.
