In the summer of 2016, I ditched relaxers and decided to just rock my natural hair. Boy, it has been such a journey as there have been multiple occasions when I just wanted to say forget it and put a relaxer in. However, the months have turned into years and I still find it hard to maintain natural hair (it hasn’t gotten easier), but I am loving the rewards.
Since it’s been a very long time since I did an update on my natural hair journey, I decided I would do a quick update post today.

What I’m Using in My Hair These Days
While I’m still using staples such as Sulfur 8 and Shea Moisture Edge Treatment, since the last time I posted about my natural hair journey, I have added in quite a few new additions that I have been using in my hair.
My hair is very dry, but my ends are coming together nicely, therefore, to keep my hair looking semi-decent when I’m not wearing protective styles I must find products to adapt to my needs when the old ones just stop working.
Below are the main products that I’m using in my hair these days:
Sulfur 8: My scalp literally sucks up grease. Since I was a kid Sulfur 8 is the only hair grease that keeps my scalp from being itchy and honestly since it’s been working for twenty some years this is just something that I’m not going to remove from my hair care routine.
Shea Moisture Edge Treatment: I originally started using this product to help my edges fill back in after years of sewins. However, I continue to use it as I love wearing twists and crochet so sometimes my edges still feel the strain.
Via Natural Oils: I saw this one day when shopping in Family Dollar and just purchased one of each type. I’ve been using it for my hot oil treatments and it works great. Plus, there’s the added benefit that it doesn’t cost a fortune either.
Crème of Natural Argan Oil Shampoo: This shampoo doesn’t leave my hair feeling dry after shampooing my hair. I’ve used it off an on over the years and it’s currently back into my shampoo rotation.
Design Essentials Almond & Avocado Leave-in Conditioner: This is one of the newer products that I just tried a couple of months ago for the first time. However, it smells amazing and it conditions my hair without leaving it looking or feeling overly greasy.
Hair Jam: Another staple that I’ve been using for years. I use it for my edges when my hair isn’t pressed or to catch flyaway when I’m wearing a protective style.
Clairol Professional iThrive: I tried this product originally because it was sent to me from Influenster. However, it’s the perfect conditioner to use after washing and before blow drying my hair.
Natural Hair Styles I’m Rocking These Days
Not much has changed on this front. I’m still doing crochet, twists, and just wearing my hair flat ironed. However, I have started back wearing braid styles again as well as becoming more comfortable with wearing my natural hair out since most of the permed hair has been cut out.
Below you can see a photo of my hair now after it’s washed but not yet blow dried or styles to see how my progress is coming along.
Final Thoughts on Natural Hair
Overall, this has been quite the journey. I still am hopeful that once my hair grows out some more that it will become easier to maintain (other than shampoo days of course). However, the growth is picking up and I am still chopping off the ends as new growth comes in, therefore, soon I hope to be done with the chopping process and on to just reaping all the rewards.
