Do you have children that are 5 and under that need something new to do this summer so you can keep your sanity on rainy days when they can’t go outside? Maybe you want them to do something educational at night or after dinner instead of sitting in front of the television.
I have the solution to both rainy day boredom and education during the evenings.
That solution is Noddy Toyland Detective – Let’s Investigate!
Today, I’m going to tell you what the app is about, who it’s for, and what my boys and I experienced while using the app.
Noddy Toyland Detective – Let’s Investigate Explained
Have your kids watched Noddy Toyland Detective on Netflix yet? Mine have and they all love it! I’m positive that they have watched all the episodes available at least twice. So, when I heard that there was an app for one of the shows that they have recently started watching, it was time for me to do some investigating of my own.
Kuato and Dreamworks Animation collaborated to recreate Noddy Toyland Detective based off the popular television series. The app features Noddy (aka Toyland’s most famous detective) in an adventure that encourages storytelling, learning, and most of all creative fun!
During the app, Noddy helps his friends Bump the Dog and Revs the car, and others. It is full of fun mini-games and activities. Mysteries are solved by using “Who”, “What”, and “Where”. Once the clues have all been solved, reading the story of what was experienced is a great way to put creative education to the test since it’s in the form of a narrative photo storybook.
Important Things Parents Need to Know About the App
Noddy Toyland Detective – Let’s Investigate is a paid app. Therefore, since I’m recommending that you spend money on an app it’s only right that I give you the important scoop about why you should elect to spend money on an app for your child (well this specific app anyways). Below are the main things that you should keep in mind before deciding that investing under $3 in this app isn’t for you.
- It features a Grown-Ups Corner – You can only access this by entering your birth year. Then once inside, you can set play time limits, set permissions, and even be alerted by email when your child has created new stories and artistic creations.
- The app features a personalized story book – This encourages language, sentence structure, and creativity skills.
- It helps prepare your child for school – Since the stories are based on your child’s play, this makes it a fun way for your child to develop the language and reading skills that they will need for school.
- The developers behind the game are Kuato Studios
- This app is based off the Noddy Toyland Detective that your kids may have seen on Netflix, Sprout, and NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment’s 24-Hour Preschool Network.
- It’s geared towards kid’s younger than 5. However, from my experience, my older kids (5 & 7) love playing along with my younger son (4).
Why I Recommend This App
I am not a fan of all paid apps because many are spin-offs of apps that are available for free or there are websites that you can go to and allow your kids to have the same experience on the computer for free. However, that’s not the case with Noddy Toyland Detective – Let’s Investigate. With this app, you get a unique concept based off one of your kids shows that is ACTUALLY educational for them. The best part is once you pay ($2.99) for iTunes, you aren’t hassled with in-app purchases or pop-up ads appearing that your little ones could accidentally (or intentionally) purchase.
I’m all for education and if it’s something that’s educational that will also keep the kids or at least a couple of the kid’s quiet (my house can get loud with three kids all talking at once lol) I’m all for it. I can give one of them my phone and make dinner, do some cleaning, or even check in on my emails and not have to worry about a fight or any other typical brother drama breaking out.
Basically, it helps them learn without realizing they’re learning and once they have solved a mystery I can head back over for the story.
Why My Kids Love This App
Whenever I have something new for the kids to try out I tell them that I have an activity planned for after showers. I downloaded the app on Monday evening and informed them that after showers we would be doing an extra special activity. This encourages them to not fool around during dinner and finish their chores in a timely manner because they know it’s something new that they’ve never done before.
When I pulled out my phone for activity time they were super excited. Then, when they saw the app load up everyone shouted “Noddy”. (This was so something that I should have recorded to add to this section, but I was too caught up in the moment and not thinking at the time – sometimes it’s better to experience than be caught up behind a lens anyways).
I let my youngest start off on the app first as it’s obviously geared for kids his age and I was amazed at how well the three of them worked together as we explored the app. Then once the first mystery was finally solved we could read the story.
Now, that the experience part is out of the way, let’s get back on topic to what this section is supposed to be about.
My kids love this app because they love watching Noddy on Netflix. In fact, after the first night of using this app (they are still wanting to do it nightly to date) every evening after chores, they request to watch Noddy before activity time. They love solving the clues, driving around in the car, and going into the different places to see exactly what is going on inside of them. Also, did I mention the app has music? My kids love music so even when one isn’t playing the others are still interested.
