I know I’m probably driving you all a little insane with all my healthy eating habits and this 45 Day Transformation challenge, but I am obsessed with sticking to my fitness and health goals. Who needs to wait until the New Year to plan to do something that will benefit them, right?
Well, out of all the topics that I’ve discussed this past year, I realized one thing that I haven’t covered is how to find the right exercise attire. We all know that there’s more to it than just going out and purchasing what is the cheapest and what looks the best. Therefore, today I thought I would share with you some of my best advice for finding the right exercise attire since I recently added a new fitness apparel line to my fitness clothing selection.
Purchase Based on the Type of Exercise You Do
It’s no secret that for these past few months my main form of exercise has been kickboxing. By the way, if you haven’t tried it yet you should because kickboxing is addictive and it is a great way to meet your health and fitness goals.
Anyway, in past posts, I have shared with you that kickboxing is a very intense workout. When I leave the studio, I am covered in sweat. I’ll be real, usually, within the first 15 minutes I’m drenched in sweat – and I have months of classes under my belt now!
Therefore, when I purchase exercise attire it must be something that’s not going to have me looking like I wet my pants (kickboxing makes everything sweat – well maybe not your feet) or have just competed in a wet t-shirt contest.
To date, the only fitness line that was checking off all my expectations was the VS Sports Line. But, I recently tried prAna when I went to class on Sunday and while the Filament Tank and Caraway Tight was cute, fit great, and was comfortable initially, I wouldn’t recommend the Caraway Tight for kickboxing, Zumba, or any other form of exercising that is going to cause you to do a ton of excessive sweating. However, the Filament Tank seems as though it is great for most activities.

Have a Budget in Place
While it’s not a good thing to purchase exercise attire based solely on how cheap or expensive the clothing is, you do want to make sure that you have a budget in place. Trust me, it is easy to splurge on exercise attire- I have done it a couple of times myself.
Therefore, before going shopping for exercise attire make sure you have a budget in place. Your wallet will thank you later!
For example, having a budget of $200 in place could either get you one outfit or it could get you 5 or 6 outfits depending on the brand you’re shopping. Let’s say you’re shopping at prAna for example, with the Filament Tank you’re looking at $69 and the Caraway Tight is going to run you $89, which brings you to a total of $158. You could throw in some socks and/or fitness shoes and your budget is already spent.
While this may seem like a ton of cash to drop on one outfit, if it’s going to last you for a few years, fit your fitness needs, and you honestly feel like it worth the money, why not? In the long run, more expensive and quality items can be a better investment than purchasing 10 cheap exercise outfits for $200 and having to replace them in two months or less.
When it comes to your budget and how much you’re willing to pay for your exercise attire, it’s 100% up to you.
As I mentioned for me, I usually purchase from VS Sport, which is kind of pricey for fitness wear in my opinion, however, the attire checks all my boxes and lasts for more than a year. Plus, there is the added benefit that the leggings can be worn as everyday attire so I don’t have to just wear them when I am going to class.
Make Sure You’re Comfortable in the Attire and It Fits
Making sure you’re comfortable in the attire and it fits is probably one of the most important factors when it comes to purchasing exercise attire. This can be hard to do when shopping online, but after a small test order or going to the store once, you should be able to shop more flexibly online.
When trying out prAna, this was one of my biggest concerns as to if the clothing would be comfortable. However, they are known for having yoga and activewear so I figured based on the reviews that if I ordered the proper size I would be good to go.
PrAna’s attire was very comfortable for me and it fit. I was skeptical about the Filament top since it was a bra top and I wasn’t sure about doing all the movements that the first 15 minutes of class require without a sports bra. However, so I could give my truly honest opinion and test out the shirt correctly I did and it wasn’t bad. The shirt provided great support while running, doing burpees, and other exercises. Plus, the back gives it a little extra flavor.
The pants were a little on the short side, but I could pull them off as capris. From the photo on the model, they are also above her ankles so I guess that is the trend.
Really, my only complaint about the Caraway Tight was while they didn’t make it look like I wet my pants, I could feel the sweat all the way down my thighs. I couldn’t wait for class to be over so I could take them off and shower. However, even though this is something that I didn’t like, maybe it’s not something that you would mind, so the Caraway Tight could be a good fit for you.
Research How Long the Attire Will Last
The last thing I consider when purchasing exercise attire is how long will they last. I’ll go ahead and be honest and say that I have some VS Sports leggings that I have had for close to two years now and they look and fit just as well as the day that I purchased them. I have a strong feeling that this will be the same with prAna. I can tell that the Caraway Tight are high-quality leggings and I don’t see them wearing down anytime soon.
When spending any sort of money, no matter how much or how little, the expectation is that it will last for a little while at least. Therefore, researching how long the attire will last is something that I had to mention.
Closing Thoughts on Finding the Right Exercise Attire
Overall, finding the right exercise attire is something that you must put some thought into. I don’t know about you, but I like to make smart purchases and make sure that I’m not uncomfortable or feeling awkward when working out. I hope that this article can help you during your next exercise attire shopping tip.
