One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is “taking better care of myself”. I find myself saying that often and start off on the right track. However, before January is over with, I’m back to some of my old habits. As a busy mom, I know you understand. Trying to stay healthy is a major feat. However, I have found these five, simple tricks below are excellent ways to stay healthy while on the go.
Get Your Rest
Okay, it’s easier said than done. But getting sleep is one of your first defense mechanisms against a low immune system. Sleep deprivation leads to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attacks, and other cardiovascular diseases. Yes, weight gain can also be associated with sleep deprivation. Think about it. Your body and brain can become extremely exhausted. The body will soon become strained and unable to function as normal.
In my case, I am a night owl, and I have found myself slipping back into the happy of not only being up all day while the kids are at school but staying up until 3-4 am in the morning working. Then, guess what, time to be back up at 5. Not only did this cause me to slip back into my habit of drinking Red Bull again at night, but I also was feeling super groggy upon waking up, which is fun for no one.
Now, I am back using my Sleep Reminder app on my iPhone to ensure that I at least get in bed and shut off my computer by 1 am.
Wash Your Hands Often
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that clean hands save lives. By properly washing your hands, you are reducing contamination of your home and workspace of respiratory illnesses.
Good old soap and warm water are always preferred. However, if you do not have access to it, keep hand sanitizer around. The sanitizer will not kill all germs, typically only reducing them by a fraction. This is because most people don’t use enough of it or it gets wiped off too soon. But eliminating some germs is better than none.
When at home, I am constantly washing my hands. In fact, I am a bit obsessed because I have a huge Bath & Body Works hand soap collection. Whenever they have a sale going on, I stock up on hand soap and those mini hand sanitizers so I can keep my hands nice and clean when I am on the go.
Lower Your Sweets Intake
We all love some sort of sweet treat. However, did you know that sugar can compete with space in your immune system’s cells?
We know that white blood cells are bacteria and virus killing cells. They need Vitamin C to make it happen! When too much sugar invades the immune system, it takes up the space for the Vitamin C. So just lower your sweets intake. If you get a sweet tooth, eat orange, red, and pink fruits such as oranges, strawberries, tomatoes, and grapefruits.
Do Moderate to Light Exercise
You don’t need to run marathons to keep fit. You can do moderate to light exercises while on the go. Try walking a bit more. Yes, parking your car a few lot’s over will work. Ride your bike with the kids. If you work outside of the home, walk the stairs with a friend or two during your breaks.
Last month I was doing a two-week fitness challenge on Facebook. While things went great when it was over I was at a complete loss for how to keep up to momentum without accountability partners. So, I looked around for something that could help me stay motivated with exercising and came across this great free app called, “Habitica”, it not only helps me stick to exercising for at least 10 minutes per day, but it helps me do all sorts of tasks that I need to do on a daily basis while also forming other healthy habits along the way.

When I told my mom, I was taking the Elderberry Lozenges she was pleased. She has been telling me to take elderberry for my immune system for years.
