4 Tips on How to Stay Productive When Working from Home in Bed

How to Stay Productive When Working From Home in Bed

As most of you probably know, I work from home as an online writer, part-time blogger, and social media influencer. Lately, with summer underway, I have been working from my bedroom a lot. This is both a blessing and a curse as I find it easy to get distracted and end up not accomplishing as much as I would like sometimes. I’m sure other mompreneurs can relate, so I am sharing my top tips that help me be productive when working from home in bed.

Buy a Lap Desk

A lap desk or monitor stand and a wrist-supporting mouse pad are helpful when working from the bed. Both provide a stable surface to work on to help you stay productive and complete tasks on time.  With a lap desk, you can easily change positions to stay comfortable and still get work done.

I have used the 3M monitor stand and found the table easy to put together. It only took me about 5 minutes to assemble. The downside with this table is that it comes apart as easy as it goes together, while in use or while being moved.

I enjoyed using a mouse pad with gel wrist rest while working from bed. Even when I am not working from bed, I still use it because it feels great on my wrists and helps me get more work done. It is an everyday use item.

You don’t need all of your normal office supplies to work from bed successfully, but it helps to have the most used items handy.

Brighten Up the Space

If your bedroom is a bit dark, consider changing the color scheme. Once you get the space tidy and have used your favorite cleaning supplies to make the space smell fresh, work on brightening it up. Let natural light come in from your window. Replace light bulbs with LED options as they provide a brighter, whiter light. Use brighter, happier colors in the space to make it a more productive space.

Use a Reading Pillow

A reading pillow is a great way to support your back and still keep you productive when working from bed. The reading pillow also prevents needing additional medical supplies like wrist braces, back braces, and neck pillows to get through a workday.

Change Positions Often

Move around often, especially when you find a significantly comfortable position, as you are more likely to fall asleep when you are more comfortable (Trust me I know it has happened to me on more than one occasion, especially when I am working the night shift). Even if you are just shifting your weight to one side of your body or another, it is still movement, that helps wake up your body to stay focused on working.

It is also important to stretch periodically by getting out of bed. Use some of your bigger pieces of office furniture, such as a desk, as your stabilizer for stretching muscles between tasks.

Last Word on Working From Home in Bed

It is possible to stay productive when working from bed. When you have the right equipment and you remain comfortable, you get more done. Don’t get too comfortable, though — just be comfortable enough to complete your work. Since your body will be in an unfamiliar working position, make sure you are also supporting your wrists with a keyboard with gel wrist rest to help prevent carpal tunnel, muscle strains, and tendonitis.

    This is totally true! I’ve bought so many devices to help me work in bed. Nothing has worked though! It’s like now, I can’t even sleep in my bed because I’ve tried working there.

    I agree with changing positions often. Because 1. It will help me stay alert because I always work late at night and 2. To avoid back pain.

    I should try and get me a lap desk. I work in bed a lot, but I am never really comfortable, mainly because I can’t get the computer situated. A lap desk would sure solve that!

  14. I love those wrist pads – I used one for the first time in my last office job and it made such a difference I bought one to use at home too! Great tip about the lighter colours and natural light too; without it I just want to sleep. 🙂
