5 Fun Things to do in Hampton Roads

Staying busy as a family is important. Knowing what is available in your local area is also important. Taking advantage of day trips opportunities is fulfilling and helps you learn more about the history and culture within your local area. These are some of my favorite things to do with my kids in my local area.

Sailing in Yorktown

Being on the water is relaxing. In Virginia, you can book a sailing charter trip in Yorktown. Some of the tours go past battlegrounds and other historic points of interest. If you are on the water at the right time of the day, you may spot some dolphins or other sea life in the water. A few years ago I was able to experience this and it was such a fun and unique experience.

Spirit of Norfolk

The Spirit of Norfolk is a dinner cruise ship. It is a great option for a romantic evening with your special someone or a relaxing retreat to spend time with a close friend or family member. On the ship, there is live entertainment and a dancing deck with a DJ. Skyline views are all around and catching the right sunset moments makes for perfect photo opportunities. For Mother’s Day this year, I treated my mom and aunt to their first Spirit of Norfolk experience.

Virginia Living Museum

The Virginia Living Museum is a great destination for families. The setting is open, and in some sections is similar to a zoo setting with animals and habitats. There are interactive exhibits and several discovery centers to provide education to the visitors. Throughout the summer months, a featured exhibit is Dinosaur Discoveries, which is running through September 5.

Yorktown Beach

Yorktown Beach is a great place for families to enjoy some time outside, especially before going sailing. Relax in the sun and let the kids play in the sand. The beach is only about 3 acres in size, but is quite popular for impromptu and planned weddings too. Families can enjoy free concerts on Thursday nights during the summer months at Riverwalk Landing. Nevertheless, if you prefer a bit of privacy, you can also hear the music while on the beach.

Busch Gardens

When thrill rides, entertainment, and fair food are your family’s idea of a great time, Busch Gardens has plenty of entertainment to tire even the most energetic children out. I enjoy taking my kids frequently for the events there, such as Christmas Town. Busch Gardens has different events throughout the year, including a holiday event. There are attractions specifically for children and families throughout the theme park.

Closing Thoughts

Take advantage of local entertainment, and the specials that some businesses offer to locals exclusively. Decide what to do each weekend as a family. Letting the kids have their opinions helps them enjoy the activity more. It is important to do something that each member of the family enjoys before selecting a second family activity from the same person so that no one feels left out. Experiencing different activities is important and helps your children learn about where they are growing up.
