CEFALY is an innovative migraine treatment that focuses on treating the root cause of migraine pain.
It’s one of the natural ways to treat migraines that is easy to use.
This medical device works by stimulating the Trigeminal nerve accessed through the skin on the forehead. It treats acute migraine attacks quickly as well as prevents future episodes.
It is FDA cleared, doctor recommended, and doesn’t require a prescription.

I’ve been using this migraine relief product for a few weeks and today I wanted to share my experience so far with you.

I’m structuring this review a bit differently so I can easily answer some of the common questions that you probably have about CEFALY (or at least the ones I had before I started using it).
I will start by saying that it has been working great for me so far and I feel like it is one of the best OTC migraine relief products that I have tried.
Now, let’s get started.
How to use CEFALY
The first thing you’re going to want to do is read the user manual.
Yes, it’s big and seems like a lot, but trust me, it is worth the read so you know exactly how to operate the device and what to expect.
Quick start steps:
Note: These are the basic steps for using the device, but you should still read the user manual before using the device for the first time.
- Wash your forehead with soap and water
- Dry your skin completely
- Apply one of the electrodes firmly to the curved area between your eyebrows while looking in the mirror.
- Connect the device securely to the electrodes and select either the ‘Acute’ or ‘Prevent’ mode.
- If possible, lie down in a dark room for the session and adjust the intensity as needed.
Does CEFALY really work?
From my very first time using the device, I felt that it worked.
I was experiencing vision blurriness, which is a sign for me that I am about to get a very serious migraine.
I turned off all of the lights, put it in prevention mode, and laid down in bed. While I was only able to keep it on the first time for about 10 minutes or so, after I ended the session within 20 minutes my vision went back to normal AND the migraine never came.
It is also important to note that I didn’t do anything other than take a hot shower after my session so the results had to have come from using the device.
Therefore, in my opinion, CEFALY does work and it doesn’t take a long time to see results.
Does CEFALY hurt?
I mentioned earlier that during my first CEFALY session I was only able to keep the device on for about 10 minutes.
I wouldn’t necessarily say that CEFALY hurt, but it wasn’t the most pleasant experience. For me, I’m still working myself up to where I can do what would be considered a full session, BUT even not doing a full session still gets me the desired results.
I’m not really sure how to put how it feels into words, but I’ll try.
It’s kind of like an intense tingling sensation. I felt it in my eyebrows, which kind of weirded me out AND definitely recommend adjusting from the max setting (this is why it’s important to read the user manual so you can quickly adjust the intensity). My chest also felt a little weird, maybe like zaps in my heart, during my first few sessions, but this is probably mostly due to me being anxious/not warmed up to using the device.
Basically, I wouldn’t say it hurts, per se, but it is something you’ll probably have to get used to.
Is CEFALY the same as a TENS unit?
CEFALY is an eTNS unit, but it is very similar to TENS units.
Does insurance cover CEFALY?
Since CEFALY is considered a medical device and treats a very common medical condition, you’re probably wondering if your insurance will cover the cost.
The bad news is insurance doesn’t cover CEFALY at the time of this writing, but you can use your FSA or HSA.
Also, if you find the payment to be a bit much to pay all at once they offer financing available through Affirm and PayPal Credit.
Pros and Cons of CEFALY
Now that we’ve covered my specific opinions and experience with CEFALY, I just want to do a quick pros and cons list for those who wanted to skip straight to this part.
- Easy to use
- Natural way to manage migraines
- Can be used during migraines and also to prevent them
- Comes with a case to keep all accessories tidy
- No side effects (at least that I have experienced so far)
- The first few sessions may be uncomfortable/unpleasant
- Electrode patches may cause irritation or itchiness

As someone who suffers from multiple migraines throughout the month, CEFALY is the migraine relief product that I have always been looking for but didn’t know existed.
As with using any new product, there is an initial adjustment period, but the results from the very first use were enough to keep me coming back for more.
I haven’t heard of this before. I deal with migraines and would love to find something that works.
I know that migraine can be so unpleasant and it changes the life completely. It’s great to know that there are new solution to it!
this product I haven’t heard of before, I must do more research on it. Thanks for sharing this with us.
My husband has had migraines for as long as he can remember and treatments always seem hit or miss, I bet he’d be willing to give this a try!
I need this! My husband deals with migraines several times a month. I wonder if it would work for him?
It is definitely worth trying in my opinion. I have horrible migraines, but since I’ve started using this they have become less frequent and if I’m able to catch it before it starts I can stop it entirely.
I hadn’t heard of this before. I am glad it seemed to help you. Migraines aren’t fun.
