The heat is on in Virginia. School will be back in session in approximately two weeks. While I still have a little back to school items to purchase, I have our morning routine already planned so we can easily slip back into it. Therefore, today I’m sharing how I am handling back to school like a boss.
The steps are easy to follow and they may help you make your mornings less stressful too.
#1 Get Up Before the Kids
As an entrepreneur, I always must be up early if I want to get some work done before the house is full of noise. However, during the summer it’s not that important since the kids go to daycare and I get majority of the day to work and I can always work late. With school in session, even if you don’t work, it’s important to be up before the kids and here’s why:
- It gives you time to have a moment of peace before things start going crazy
- You can finish the cleaning or other chore you neglected the night before
- You can make lunch for the kids without being interrupted
- You can check your emails and/or make your to do list for the day (If you need help staying on task with your to do list I highly recommend Habitica).
#2 Make Use of the Night Before
The night before each school day, it’s important that you get major things out of the way. For me personally I like to do the following things the night before to ensure the morning runs more smoothly:
- Take my shower before bed to avoid being rushed for time in case something goes wrong in the morning.
- Have the kids take their showers before bed.
- Plan dinner for the next day (especially important since the kids have football practice and need to eat dinner before practice – basically it must be made right when they walk in the door)
- Take out the kid’s clothes and shoes so they are already ready when they wake up in the morning
- Take out the trash, load the dishwasher, and put a load of laundry in the washer and/or dryer
- Make sure that everything the kids need is already in their backpacks
- Make sure the lunch boxes have been cleaned out and are on the counter waiting for me in the morning
#3 Make Your Morning Routine Quick
While having three kids means that I already must have a simple hygiene routine, back to school means that little luxurious I have come to love during the summer, must be eliminated and replaced with a routine that takes no more than 15-20 minutes.
By taking a shower before getting in bed I am saving time, so in the mornings (either while the kids are doing hygiene or during my 1-2 hours of being up ahead of them) I still must brush my teeth, do something with my hair, and take care of my face.
My Back to School Morning Routine
The first thing I like to do is either have a cup of green tea or lemon water upon wakeup. They both give me a boost of energy and allow me to relax and prepare for the day.
Next, it’s time to brush my teeth. This consists of me flossing, brushing with whitening toothpaste, and using mouthwash.
After that, it’s time for my face. If I have extra time in the morning and haven’t done a facial mask in a while, I’ll put on a facial mask for 5 minutes while I check my emails to make sure nothing work-related needs my immediate attention. If I don’t need to use a mask, I’ll just grab one of my favorite cleansers and then apply the Vineyard Gold Facial Oil by Merlot Skincare. Now, all that’s left is my hair.
If it’s winter, I won’t worry too much about it because I can just comb and brush it and throw on my hoodie. However, if it’s not jacket season and my hair isn’t done, I’ll usually just throw it in a messy bun unless I find extra time (meaning getting up even earlier) to straighten my hair.
About the Vineyard Gold Facial Oil
I know you probably haven’t heard me mention the Vineyard Gold Facial Oil before, so I’ll take a few moments to fill you in on the details about that since it is a product that I am considering making a part of my permanent back to school morning routine.
I like this product because it features grape seed, which is great for acne. It can be used during all seasons yet it’s especially effective for combating dry winter skin. The best part is it is 100% pure and nature so it absorbs instantly. No worrying about having that greasy feeling on your skin while out waiting for the school bus.
#4 Don’t Be Afraid to Use Tools
I’ve already mentioned using Habitica to stay on track with your to do list. I’ve been using the free app myself for about six months or so and it is amazing for keeping me organized with my personal and business life.
However, this year, in addition to using Habitica, I felt we could use a more physical reminder that everyone could see. Therefore, I purchased a refrigerator calendar from Amazon. With this, it keeps everyone in the loop about football practice, football games, blogging events, and any important school dates that we need to be aware of.
As part of my back to school last minute shopping, I’ll be doing these next two weeks, I plan to get some more organization tools so I may do a blog post about that or share my insider hacks via a newsletter.
Final Thoughts on Handling Back to School Like a Boss
The summer is fun and it’s easy to get out of the hustle and bustle of the back to school flow. However, by implementing the four things mentioned above I find that I can handle back to school like a boss, therefore, not bringing too much stress into my life.
