Create a Schedule AND Actually Stick to It

The hardest part of the process is not just creating a schedule but sticking to it. We all can plan (or even say we’re going to do so something), but if you’re not prepared to stick to it then it serves no purpose.

You should take the time to create your schedule and to maintain a high level of discipline. Keep a regular, solid schedule to help you adjust to this.

I’ll admit when I first started out my kids were babies, so I worked when they slept for the most part. However, as my business grew, and the kids became older it was apparent that I needed a dedicated schedule AND had to follow it unless I wanted to be working until 4 or 5 am each day.

Now, since I’ve added a new source of income to my arsenal this year it’s even more imperative that I follow my schedule, or I won’t be able to keep anything balanced.

It can be hard, in the beginning, scheduling out your day, chores, etc. since you are home, but trust me, having a schedule and sticking to it will make being a work at home mom so much easier.

Schedule out everything on Google calendar or invest in a planner and schedule out each hour of your day to be the most productive.Click To Tweet

Don’t Be Afraid to Apply for Jobs Outside of Your Comfort Zone

Are you not lucky enough to instantly find a job that satisfies your passions?

Most of us aren’t. The essence of being a successful WAHM is being able to adapt. Learning new skills is how you continue to make money.

Step outside of your comfort zone and don’t be afraid to spend some time learning new things so you become more marketable.

For example, I made my first $1 online by taking surveys. Cliché I know, but it’s true.

Then, after days of research, I settled into writing and stuck with this solely for about 4 years.

After writing turned into me spending countless hours each week typing my fingers off without room for improvement, I ventured into other avenues such as virtual assistant work, SEO work, influencer marketing, “blogging”, and other categories.

By stepping outside of my comfort zone and applying for jobs that I had no experience with at the time, I was able to increase my income, cut back on the number of hours I worked per week, and only accept writing work in niches that I enjoyed.

Most recently, since things were super slow in January, I’ve been testing out my skills with call center work. This job is different than what I’m used to as it’s a W2 job (but still allows me to work from home and doesn’t conflict with my self-employment working hours), however, it helps me get experience in an entirely different sector.

The bottom line is stepping outside of your comfort zone lets you enhance your skills, increase your income, and increase your value to your clients.

If a job interests you apply for it – even if you don’t have any experience or references in that specific field.Click To Tweet

Have a System for Managing Leads

Even the smallest business needs to know how to manage leads. You should have a system for not only generating leads but taking those leads and turning them into paying customers.

There are platforms that can help you with this, such as Pronexis, HubSpot, and PipeDrive. Use these platforms to help manage your leads and to transform your contacts into a viable income.

Whether you don’t have the time, or you just need someone with the skills to help, a lead management system could be exactly what you need to help you increase your work from home income into a full-time salary.

When first starting out, if you don’t want to invest in a lead management software use a Google Excel sheet or keep tabs on your PayPal financial summaries (if that’s how you process your payments).Click To Tweet

Set Monthly Goals AND Actually Follow Up to See if They’re Being Met

Creating a sustainable business means constantly focusing on growth. You can do that by setting clear goals and setting aside some time every month to make sure that you’re meeting your goals.

Try to create stretch targets every month too. These are the targets that will push you to greater heights. The biggest threat to a successful WAHM business is stagnation.

For example, each month I have an income target goal based on the prior month’s income. Additionally, I also have a goal of bringing on a specific number of new clients each month. In the past, when I was first starting out, I also had a goal of mastering a new skill every couple of months.

Your goal could be as small as reaching a certain number of followers on social media to making a specific amount each year. Whatever it is just make sure to write it down somewhere and schedule a time to see if you’ve achieved your goal or what progress you have made towards it.

My Tip: When it comes to setting and tracking goals planners are the best for this. If you currently aren’t a planner type of gal, you should invest in one ASAP. They are especially great for WAHMs who are juggling multiple roles. They’ll keep you on top of everything.

Understand “Work at Home” Doesn’t Mean Easier Than 9 to 5

If you want to work at home because you think it’s easier then you’re here for all the wrong reasons. Running your own business is harder than the standard 9 to 5 grind because you’re the person who’s responsible for everything.

Expect to work longer hours in exchange for additional flexibility and freedom. The normal eight-hour days will be a thing of the past.

The most successful WAHMs are those who are prepared to work their fingers to the bone in the beginning.

My Tip: Keep in mind that when you work from home, you’re always at work. Your house is your workplace, it’s not like the typical out of the home job that when you leave the building, you’re free until you go there again.

Are You Ready to Become a WAHM?

If becoming a WAHM is your calling, these are the five principles you must follow if you’re going to succeed. It’s all about understanding the realities of this type of work and adopting a strong growth philosophy.

Anything short of that will only lead to failure.
